Tonsillitis

Symptoms of tonsillitis include a severe sore throat, (which may be experienced as referred pain to the ears), painful/difficult swallowing, coughing, headache, myalgia (muscle aches), fever and chills. Tonsillitis is characterized by signs of red, swollen tonsils which may have a purulent exudative coating of white patches (i.e. pus). Swelling of the eyes, face, and neck may occur.
In some cases, symptoms of tonsillitis may be confused with symptoms for EBV infectious mononucleosis, known colloquially as mono(US) or Glandular Fever (elsewhere). Common symptoms of Glandular Fever include fatigue, loss of appetite, an enlarged spleen, enlarged lymph nodes, and a severe sore throat, sometimes accompanied by exudative patches of pus.

Swollen Lymph Nodes (Lymphadenopathy)

Lymphadenopathy is a term meaning “disease of the lymph nodes.” It is, however, almost synonymously used with “swollen/enlarged lymph nodes”. It could be due to infection, auto-immune disease, or malignancy.

Mouth Infection (Tonsillitis)

Lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes)

Lymphadenopathy is a term meaning “disease of the lymph nodes.” It is, however, almost synonymously used with “swollen/enlarged lymph nodes”. It could be due to infection, auto-immune disease, or malignancy.

Inflammation of a lymph node is called lymphadenitis. In practice, the distinction between lymphadenopathy and lymphadenitis is rarely made. (Inflammation of lymph channels is called lymphangitis.

Genital Herpes

Herpes genitalis (or genital herpes) refers to a genital infection by herpes simplex virus.

Following the classification HSV into two distinct categories of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the 1960s, it was established that “HSV-2 was below the waist, HSV-1 was above the waist”. Although genital herpes is largely believed to be caused by HSV-2, genital HSV-1 infections are increasing and now exceed 50% in certain populations, and that rule of thumb no longer applies. HSV is believed to be asymptomatic in the majority of cases, thus aiding contagion and hindering containment.
