Biliary reflux, bile reflux, or duodenogastric reflux is a condition that occurs when bile flows upward (refluxes) from the small intestine into the stomach and esophagus.
It is different from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which happens when the stomach acids flow into the esophagus.
Symptoms
- Frequent heartburn
- Nausea
- Vomiting bile
- Backing up bile
Bile reflux, often confused with acid reflux, should not be left untreated
Causes
Most damage to the pyloric valve occurs as a complication of gastric surgery. Other causes of bile reflux include:
- Peptic ulcer
- Gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy)
